Mara, Blanchett to star in Carol
Rooney Mara is set to join Cate Blanchett in love story Carol.
The Oscar-nominated Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress is "attached to star" in the film, as a woman in her twenties who dreams of a more fulfilling life.
Cate would play a wife trapped in a loveless marriage in the big-screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novella.
Todd Haynes will direct the 1950s-set story of "pursuit, betrayal and passion", which follows the burgeoning relationship between the pair.
Todd said: "We're over-the-moon to have Rooney on board. I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate on screen is thrilling to say the least."
Producer Elizabeth Karlsen added: "Rooney Mara is one of the most interesting and striking young talents working today. There are few actors who have the weight to play against someone with the extraordinary distinction and mercurial range of Cate Blanchett and she is one of them.
"The combination of them both is something potentially sensational."
Carol, adapted by Phyllis Nagy, is scheduled to start shooting in spring 2014.
Rooney, who starred in David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects, will next be seen in Spike Jonze's Her, Stephen Daldry's Trash and opposite Casey Affleck in Ain't Them Bodies Saints.
