McClure tries comedy in new role

Vicky McClure says her new film is a chance to be funny on screen after her heavy role in This Is England.

The actress, who won a Bafta for her part in Shane Meadows' Channel 4 drama, has just started filming Svengali with Maxine Peake, Martin Freeman and Paul Gallagher.

The film, about a man from the Welsh Valleys taking a band he thinks will be the next big thing to London, is based on a YouTube series of the same name written by Jonny Owen and Dean Cavanagh.

Vicky said: "I play Shell, the girlfriend to Dixie, the lead character - played by Jonny. He's got this amazing band he wants to get out there. It's set today and it's a comedy - we'll have to see how funny I am!"

But the actress added that if there is another This Is England, her character Lol would be in a better place than she has been before.

She said: "If we go again she'll definitely have an easier go of it.

"I'm confident there will be another one but I don't know for certain. I know Shane has ideas for 1990."
