McShane for Jack The Giant Killer

Ian McShane is to play the king in Bryan Singer's new fairytale adventure Jack The Giant Killer.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star will play King Brahmwell who is not happy when his princess daughter falls for farm boy Jack after he rescues her from the clutches of a giant, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

Nicholas Hoult is starring as Jack in the film, while 19-year-old British actress Eleanor Tomlinson is playing the princess.

The film has been a pet project of Bryan's after he was given the green light by Warner Bros to remake the 1962 movie based on the fairytale of Jack And The Beanstalk.

The X-Men director teamed up with his Usual Suspects scriptwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who rewrote the screenplay.

The thriller will be a dark re-telling of the well-known fable, about a young farmer who leads a rescue mission to the giants' kingdom, after a princess is kidnapped, threatening the long-standing peace between humans and giants.

Stanley Tucci will play a villainous adviser to the king who hopes to use underhand tactics to seize power, while Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy and John Kassir will also star.

Set to be released in 2012, production is due to begin this spring and is reportedly expected to last up to nine months due to the elaborate visual effects Bryan has planned.
