Melissa Benoist joins Longest Ride

Melissa Benoist is the latest star to join the cast of The Longest Ride.

The actress - who plays Marley in hit singing show Glee - has been cast as Marcia, the college roommate of lead female character Sophie, Deadline reported.

The Longest Ride begins with a 90-year-old widower stuck alone in the wreckage of his car after a crash. He is visited by the ghost of the love of his life and as they reminisce about their lives together, their story becomes intertwined with that of a young cowboy who falls in love with college student Sophie.

Under The Dome's Britt Robertson has been cast as Sophie, and Clint Eastwood's son Scott will play the young male lead.

M*A*S*H star Alan Alda and Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston also recently boarded the project.

The Longest Ride is the latest in a string of Sparks' novels to be adapted for the big screen, including The Notebook and Safe Haven.

The film will be directed by George Tillman from a script by Craig Bolotin, Brad Desch, Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber.

It is due out in April 2015.
