Natalie Portman to star in Gravity?

Natalie Portman has been offered the lead female role in Gravity.

The Star Wars actress was approached by Warner Bros after Angelina Jolie passed on the 3D survival story, and is expected to read the latest version of the script and make a decision shortly, according to the Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business blog.

She would play a mother stranded in outer space, alongside Robert Downey Jr, who would portray her colleague in the drama, directed and co-written by Alfonso Cuaron.

Other actresses who had been linked to the role include Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansson and British stars Carey Mulligan and Sienna Miller.

Natalie is a hot property following her portrayal of an ambitious but psychologically fragile ballet dancer in Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller Black Swan, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) reportedly wants her for a Jerry Lee Lewis-related project he is developing with Brad Pitt, and British playwright Tom Stoppard is apparently writing something for her.

Natalie's forthcoming big screen outings include parts in romantic comedies No Strings and Your Highness, and the comic book adaptation of Thor.
