Oyelowo: Daniels a blunt director

David Oyelowo has revealed Lee Daniels had no qualms about shouting at actors on set of The Butler, no matter how big a star they were.

The film, based on the true story of a long-serving butler at The White House, boasts a stellar cast including Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Vanessa Redgrave and Robin Williams. But David told The Hollywood Reporter if anyone was not performing the way Lee wanted them to, he would tell them bluntly.

David explained: "Lee is not a respect-er of persons at all. There were so many huge stars in that film and he would say, 'You are F-ing up my movie! You better get it right!' And I love him for it.

"He will take you to the monitor and go 'David look at this. Fake! Oh my God, If you do that again in my movie I will...' But the thing about it is he is as hard on himself as he is with his actors."

The British actor, who has also worked with Lee on The Paper Boy said he embraced the filmmaker's style as it improved his own work.

He said: "When you're doing a film and you can feel yourself growing as an actor, you can feel you're going to place that you haven't been before. Lee creates that environment.

"That to me is success. When I walk away form a set and go 'OK I am braver. I can be more than I have been before."
