Pierce Brosnan has paid tribute to his "darling daughter" Charlotte who has died of cancer at the age of 42 – a year younger than her mother was when she succumbed to the disease.

The James Bond star, who lives in the United States, is reported to have flown back to the UK to be with his daughter, who died of ovarian cancer on Friday.

In a statement, he said: "On June 28 at 2pm my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life having succumbed to ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Alex, her children Isabella and Lucas and her brothers Christopher and Sean.

"Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.

"We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon.

"We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences."

Brosnan's first wife Cassandra was 43 when she died of cancer in 1991.
