Lucy Punch has revealed she was branded neurotic by the famously self-confessed worrier Woody Allen.
The British actress stars opposite Anthony Hopkins in Woody's new film You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, but she told The Times her audition, to replace Nicole Kidman in the role at the last minute, did not go well.
Lucy revealed: "So I was going to replace her in this all-star cast, and of course I was desperate to please him, but I didn't realise that in American-English 'quite' means 'rather' and 'quite good' means 'rather good'.
"Woody kept saying to me 'You're quite good'. Every time he said I was quite good, I kept saying 'I can do it differently! I can change!'.
"The more he said it the more ideas I offered him, until finally he said to me, 'My God, you're neurotic'. He actually called me that."
The former Doc Martin star has made it in Hollywood and also stars in Dinner For Schmucks with Paul Rudd and Bad Teacher with Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz, in which she plays a straight-laced teacher.
Lucy revealed: "So I don't wear sexy clothes, which meant I could eat normally, thank God. But actually I had eaten something just before the audition and I was in there with Cameron, who is the sweetest person in the world.
"She was trying so hard to gesture to me that a bit of my lunch was still stuck in my teeth."
