Puri takes love Journey with Mirren

Om Puri has said he is "excited" about playing Dame Helen Mirren's love interest in The Hundred-Foot Journey.

The Bollywood star is joining Dame Helen and rising star Manish Dayal in the DreamWorks movie, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey.

The film - which will be directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom, who directed Chocolat and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen - is the big-screen adaptation of Richard C Morais's best-selling book about the rivalry between an Indian family and a French family, after they open an Indian restaurant 100 feet across the street from the Michelin-starred French eaterie.

Om told Indian website "I have been watching director Lasse Hallstorm's films over the past few days. I am very excited."

Om and Dame Helen's characters start off as rivals but end up falling in love.

The 62-year-old actor has juggled his other projects to sign up to the film.

He revealed: "There are a couple of films that I was doing and the makers have been kind enough to postpone them to November as I will be away for nine weeks."

Shooting is due to start in France in September, for a release in 2014.

Om's previous English speaking roles include Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, Bafta-winning comedy East Is East and City Of Joy with Patrick Swayze.
