Reeves: Bill And Ted 3 in darkness
Keanu Reeves has cryptically revealed that Bill And Ted 3 is being surrounded by "sadness".
Rumours about a follow-up to the 1989 Excellent Adventure hit were sparked in 2012 after the Canadian star revealed a script had been written, but he has now said that the upcoming third instalment is still up in the air.
"It's a long story. There's lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories," he told MTV News.
"There's a whole thing... I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn't happened yet, because it's pretty dark out there."
Keanu, who is at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his directorial debut Man Of Tai Chi, admitted that the script has been done, but hinted that darker forces may be holding up work on the follow-up.
"There is [a script]. There's all sorts of stuff and it just can't - there's darkness out there that's keeping it from happening... It's that part of the story where it's looking grim. It's the dark period of the idea!" added the 49-year-old, who played Theodore 'Ted' Logan.
His co-star Alex Winter, who portrayed Bill S Preston Esq, previously denied that work on Bill And Ted 3 was under way in March.
"There's no drama. There's no legal skirmish. There's no nothing," he said.
"There's me, Keanu, [screenwriters] Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original core. We built a story. They wrote a script. We're tinkering with the script to get it perfect. Then we will go get the money. Then we will shoot it. And that's really all there is to it."
The original 1989 time-travelling sci-fi comedy spawned a 1991 sequel, two spin-off TV series, a comic, computer games and even a theme park show.
