Milla Jovovich's Resident Evil: Afterlife has topped the US box office.
The 3D horror movie - the fourth instalment in the Resident Evil series - earned 27.7 million dollars over the weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
Resident Evil was the only film in new release on the historically slow movie-going weekend following Labor Day in the US. With an estimated box office total of 82 million dollars, it was the lowest grossing weekend of the year.
Takers, which is in its third week of release, came in second with 6.1 million dollars.
Last weekend's top film, the George Clooney thriller The American, took in 5.9 million.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday to Sunday at US and Canadian theatres are according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released on Monday.
