RTE last night insisted that Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy is not a friend of Ronan Keating, despite the Boyzone singer claiming the pair are close.
The TV presenter has been criticised for failing to ask Keating about his marriage difficulties when he appeared on the show last Friday night.
RTE had promoted the show earlier stating “everything” about the singer's private life would be “on the table” following his marriage difficulties last year.
Keating was linked to one of the group's backing dancers, 27-year-old Francine Cornell, in 2009.
When he was asked about the Late Late interview yesterday, Keating said: “Ryan and I are friends. He was good to me on Friday. We spoke before the interview about how it was going to go.”
However a spokeswoman for RTE denied that Tubridy had agreed the content of the interview with Keating in advance.
“It's Late Late Show policy for Ryan to meet with all his guests prior to the show on Friday nights,” she said.
But RTE also took the unusual step of rejecting Keating's claim that Tubridy was a friend.
“Ryan only knows Ronan in his professional capacity as a TV presenter. They have no friendship whatsoever outside of their professional relationship.”
