Kristin Scott Thomas has revealed she picks parts based on the director nowadays, rather than the role itself.

The 53-year-old actress, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance in The English Patient, admitted her motivation for choosing projects has changed as she's matured.

"I'm much more interested in working with a director, rather than on a role specifically," she said, adding: "I'm more interested by the director's atmosphere and his way of film-making."

Kristin, who has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible and Robert Redford in The Horse Whisperer, admitted her break-out role in Four Weddings And A Funeral seems like a "lifetime" ago.

"Well I'm 20 years older! It's the same and it's different at the same time. I dunno. How long have you got? It feels like a lifetime ago. It is a lifetime," she said.

The actress stars as Frances Ternan in The Invisible Woman, starring and directed by Ralph Fiennes. The period drama, written by The Iron Lady and Shame's Abi Morgan, tells the story of author Charles Dickens (played by Ralph) and his mistress Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones).

As a mother-of-three, Kristin can relate to her alter-ego being so protective over her daughter, saying: "You do what's best for your child, even if in her case the decision of what to do must have been really, really hard.

"But things have changed since then and a woman's lot was not easy, especially when you were on the stage. They were assumed to be loose women and keeping the idea of having morals was very important. It was a very, very, very hard life."
