Scott Thomas surprised by Refn role

Nicolas Winding Refn has revealed he wanted Kristin Scott Thomas for his new film because he was a fan of her in rom-com Four Weddings And A Funeral.

The actress - who played uptight Fiona in Richard Curtis' 1994 film - stars opposite Ryan Gosling as a hateful, tacky mother who demands her son (Gosling) avenge the murder of his brother in the violent film noir.

Nicolas revealed: "She asked why I would want to work with her, for something like this. And I said 'because you made Four Weddings And A Funeral, honey'.

"And she got what that meant. In that she wanted to change something in herself, because I saw that she had no problem turning on the b**** witch."

When the film premiered at Cannes it was reportedly booed by the audience, who were disgusted by the level of gore and violence.

Nicolas said his response to his critics is: "Thank you very, very, very much."

He added: "Art is not about good or bad. It's about in between the experience itself and the more pure you can make that, the more interesting it becomes. So the thin line between love and hate of art is very, very similar, it just flips the coin

"It's interesting that people can love you for the same thing other ones hate you for. Then you know you've done something right."
