Ridley Scott has been tipped to direct a prequel and sequel to Blade Runner.

With Alcon Entertainment set to produce the prequel and follow-up to the cult sci-fi classic, they are currently negotiating production rights with producer/director Bud Yorkin, reports Deadline.

Alcon may produce a string of films based on concepts from the original, however, these rights forbid the company from remaking the 1982 science fiction favourite.

It has also been rumoured that Christopher Nolan has been mooted as a possible director, however, co-founder of Alcon Entertainment, Andrew Kosove told LA Times' 24 Frames: "We haven't met Ridley... but the thought of re-engaging with his artistic vision is very exciting, and [him directing] is something we think would be wonderful."

Commenting on the impending project, both co-founders and co-CEOs of Alcon Entertainment, Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said: "We are honoured and excited to be in business with Bud Yorkin.

"This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favourite film for both of us. We recognise the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only."
