Screen date for new Star Wars film
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit our cinema screens on May 26 2017, Disney announced today.
The film will follow on from the events of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which will open in UK cinemas on December 18.
Rian Johnson, known for time travel film Looper, has been confirmed as the writer and director of the next in the Star Wars franchise.
The first in a series of Star Wars stand-alone films was also announced today, with Disney chairman and chief executive Bob Iger confirming at a shareholder meeting that a spin-off called Rogue One will be released on December 16 next year.
Gareth Edwards, who directed Godzilla, will direct the film, with the script coming from Chris Weitz, who wrote the screenplay for About A Boy.
Rogue One is set to star British actress Felicity Jones, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in The Theory Of Everything, and will be filmed in London this summer.
