Spectre outperforms Skyfall at the box office after first week
James Bond's latest adventure, Spectre, has made history after breaking existing UK box office records .
The 24th film in the franchise, which stars Daniel Craig in his fourth outing as 007, banked over £41 million in the UK in its first seven days of release, eclipsing Skyfall's £20.1 million opening in 2012.
It broke UK box office records by taking £6.3 million on its opening day, beating its predecessor's £6.2 million opening day three years ago.
Spectre, which opened in 647 cinemas and on 2,500 screens around the UK on October 26, also beat the current record holder - Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban - which enjoyed a £23.8 million opening in 2004.
The movie has grossed over £51 million from its openings in the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, ahead of its launch in the US on Friday.
It is now on course to take over the mantle from Skyfall as the UK's highest-grossing movie of all time.
However, while Spectre may have smashed box office records, its average ticket sales per screen in the UK fails to live up to Skyfall with £17,000 as compared to its predecessor's £34,000.
The film's producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, said: "We're so grateful to all our James Bond fans and the British public for making Spectre's debut in the UK box office history!"
Gary Barber, MGM chairman and chief executive, added: "What an incredible thrill it is for us at MGM to see how James Bond continues to deliver such excitement to his fans. This record-breaking support from UK audiences for what is our 24th outing is nothing short of amazing."
Directed by Skyfall film-maker Sam Mendes, Spectre - which also stars Christoph Waltz, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista and Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci as Bond girls - sees Craig's MI6 agent alter-ego confront enemies of his past.
Jurassic World remains the movie to overtake for the title of UK's biggest film of 2015, bringing in £63.7 million.
However, both are likely to face competition from Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it opens on December 17.
