Stevens could Escape From New York

Dan Stevens is rumoured to be in the running to star as anti-hero Snake Plissken in a remake of Escape From New York.

According to, the former Downton Abbey star is on the shortlist of actors being considered to take on Kurt Russell's role in a reboot of John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi action movie.

Charlie Hunnam and The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal are also being considered for the role of the convicted bank robber chosen to enter a giant maximum security prison to try and rescue the President of the United States.

Silver Pictures and StudioCanal are looking to remake the movie - which was originally set in a 'future' of 1997 - and Starlog claims the new script sees Snake leading a team of misfits in the rescue operation, rather than going it alone.

Charlie, star of Sons Of Anarchy and Pacific Rim, is currently being tipped to play the lead in Guy Ritchie's new King Arthur movie while Downton's Dan is about to prove his action muscle in new thriller The Guest.
