Taken 3 steals lead at box office
Taken 3, starring Liam Neeson, has taken first place at the UK and US box office.
The third instalment in the action trilogy, which sees Liam reprising his role as vengeance-seeking ex-CIA agent Bryan Mills, has landed the top spot at the box office in the UK and North America in its opening weekend.
The Fox thriller, which also stars Forest Whitaker and Famke Janssen, ended The Theory Of Everything's lead in the UK after taking around £6.7 million. It also ended The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies' three-week reign in the US with box office takings of approximately 40.4 million US dollars (£26.6 million).
Disney musical Into The Woods, starring Meryl Streep, James Corden and Johnny Depp, came in second place with UK takings of around £2.48 million, followed by The Theory Of Everything, which stars Golden Globe-winner Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking and Felicity Jones as his first wife Jane, in the third spot with estimated takings of £2.43 million.
The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies and Paddington rounded out the top five in the UK.
Civil rights drama Selma took second place in the US charts, with takings of around 11.2 million US dollars (£7.3 million), followed by Into The Woods with 9.7 million US dollars (£6.3 million).
The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies slipped down to fourth place in America after taking around 9.4 million US dollars (£6.2 million), with Angelina Jolie's war biopic Unbroken in the fifth spot in the States with estimated takings of 8.4 million US dollars (£5.5 million).
