The Fall: Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson to return in third series of hit crime drama
What is Paul Spector's fate?
Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson are to return in the third series of The Fall - where viewers will finally find out the fate of serial killer Paul Spector.
The Belfast-based hit crime drama left viewers on a cliffhanger - with Dornan's Paul Spector lying shot in the arms of detective Stella Gibson played by X-Files star Gillian Anderson.
Season two ended to the sound of Gibson desperately shouting "we're losing him" while Spector looked as though he was losing consciousness.
On Tuesday the BBC announced the return of the BBC2 thriller with a five-part run which will bring the story to a close.
But viewers shouldn't get too excited just yet - as it won't be on our screens until next year.
Written by Allan Cubitt, the mini-series, shot entirely in Northern Ireland, became BBC2's biggest drama launch in eight years when it aired in May 2013. It was well received by critics and audience alike and won a number of accolades.
Writer and director Allan Cubitt said: “The cliffhanger ending of season two was conceived in the hope of further exploring the characters and the themes that are at the heart of The Fall.”
The Fall sees Anderson play a detective, seconded to Belfast from the Metropolitan Police, to sniff out a serial killer stalking the city streets for his female prey. It's a psychological spine-chiller that examines the lives of two hunters within one story.
Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama, said: "The story is far from over. Allan has known the end game from the beginning - the cat and mouse game between Gillian and Jamie has one last act to play out. Who will win?”
Season two brought in more than three million viewers making it one of BBC Two’s highest performing dramas of 2014. And around 3.6 million tuned into the feature-length finale last December.
The Fall was Holywood-born Jamie Dornan's first major lead part which helped him secure his role as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey which has propelled him into global stardom.
He also enjoyed success in his first film role in Marie Antoinette and later when he joined American TV show Once Upon A Time.
Before that he was primarily known for his successful modelling career for brands such as Calvin Klein.
