Tobey Maguire has revealed his Great Gatsby character was very different to him as he has been sober since the age of 19.
The actor stars alongside his friend Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann's new film, but says his own life is nothing like the endless whirl of parties in The Great Gatsby.
Spider-Man actor Tobey said: "I think I've followed a fairly normal trajectory through my life even though I was acting at 13 years old. I don't think I indulged to any level that was abnormal.
"In my late teens and early twenties I started to do movies and got well known but I don't think I indulged to any level that is abnormal.
"But I did as a teenager have some difficulty in that way and had to make some life decisions and change some of my behaviour. I got sober at 19 and have been sober since so there was no excess in that regard from 19 on."
Tobey also revealed he had previously auditioned for Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, which Leonardo DiCaprio starred in, and from then onwards was determined to work with the director.
He said: "It was one of the best experiences auditioning that I'd had. He was so much fun to work with and I remember always thinking I'd love to work with Baz based on that one-hour audition.
"I've known him through the years and finally getting to collaborate with him and being in auditions with him while we were auditioning other people for the movie was fun.
"I did start to understand his approach to auditions. He looks at it as essentially rehearsals for his movie."
