Tom Cruise is in talks to star in One Shot, a thriller based on the Lee Child book series.
The Mission: Impossible actor would play former military policeman Jack Reacher in the big-screen adaptation, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, reported Deadline.
Tom, who differs physically from the book character, has support from the author to play the role.
"Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way," Lee has said.
In One Shot, Jack investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured, and the ex-cop soon realises it is more complicated than originally thought.
While the novel is set in the Midwest, the movie is expected to shoot in Pittsburgh.
If the film comes to fruition, it would also be a reunion for Tom and Christopher, who previously collaborated on Valkyrie. The writer-director also did some script work on the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
