Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill has announced that he is leaving the soap.

The actor said he would be departing the ITV show later in 2019 after four years in the role of Robert Preston.

Gemmill assured fans there would still be “shenanigans” in upcoming storylines, but his time on the soap was coming to an end.

The actor has been in the soap since 2015, playing the husband of Tracy Barlow.

Gemmill broke the news of his departure to fans on Twitter, promising more drama to come.

He said: “Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the time has come for me to hang up the chef’s gear and head for pastures new.

“There is still a lot of drama & shenanigans to come for Robert but I will be leaving @itvcorrie later in the year.”

The news provoked a strong reaction from fans online.

Welsh international rugby union referee Nigel Owens was among the fans wishing the actor luck.

He wrote: “Best of wishes for the future but very sorry to hear your leaving the street.”
