Vera Farmiga grew up with a “deep appreciation” for her Ukrainian roots.
The 37-year-old actress was born and raised in the US, although both her parents are Ukrainian and it’s very important to the star that she never loses sight of her legacy. As much as she feels proud to have been brought up in America, Vera adores learning about Ukrainian culture, and says her family have done their best to ensure she maintains tradition.
“My grandparents made sure that we grew up with a deep appreciation for our heritage,” explained the star.
Vera initially found it tough adapting to American society, as she was raised in a close-knit Ukrainian-American community. The star didn’t speak English until the age of six, but was soon on her way to becoming the articulate actress she is today. Vera’s steely determination has helped her though life’s challenges and she’s happy to say she’s never been walked over.
“I don’t intimidate easily. That’s just a quality I possess. I stand my ground,” she told Total Film.
