Zack Snyder says making his new animated movie was a "totally different ball game".
"It was more like a marathon than a sprint," the 300 filmmaker explained at the Hollywood premiere of his new family-friendly adventure Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole.
The acclaimed director revealed "the challenges are different" working with animation.
"You have to endure the process of development, the re-working and re-recording with actors but it's also interesting because you can dial in each little aspect," he said. "It is a totally different ball game but the thing is it's super-rewarding."
Zack revealed he'd loved bringing Kathryn Lasky's beloved owl books to the big screen.
"I love the hero's journey, for me anyway that's what I was attracted to at first, just this idea that we could create a whole world and send this owl out on an adventure," he explained.
"It's this crazy evolution that happens over a long period of time but one day when you're sitting in a theatre and see these incredible images you're like 'Wow, I guess it was worth it'," he laughed.
