DVD: The Secret of Kells

Think a cartoon about the creation of a 9th-century religious manuscript will be dry? Think again. The Secret of Kells is a gem of a film and one that should have children and adults entranced alike.

Brendan is a young apprentice at the Abbey of Kells, which his uncle is desperately fortifying to protect against Viking raiders. A master illuminator seeks refuge at the abbey and teaches Brendan his secrets as he sets about finishing his book. Along the way the apprentice discovers the world outside the high walls and is aided in his quest by a faerie spirit called Aisling. The animation is at times breathtaking, and the story brisk.
