MTV awards host Selena Gomez turns Northern Ireland trip into a family vacation

MTV European Music Awards host Selena Gomez plans to turn her first trip to Northern Ireland into a four-day sightseeing holiday for her family.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph from Canada, where the actress and popstar is currently on tour with her band The Scene, Gomez said she was “excited but nervous” about presenting the awards ceremony, which will be broadcast to millions of households across the globe from the Odyssey Arena on November 6.

And the 19-year-old said she was particularly looking forward to exploring Belfast's Titanic Quarter, after her heartthrob boyfriend Justin Bieber cleared the Staples Center in LA last month for a romantic, private screening of her favourite movie, Titanic.

Gomez said: “When I was approached about the Emas I thought they were just asking me to perform with my band, but I was so excited when I realised they wanted me to present as well. It's such an honour for me and I'm delighted my band will be part of it too. It's going to be a real fun night. I'm already nervous about it, but I know I'll be fine. And my family are all coming over too, so I'll have them with me for support. We're planning to stay for maybe four days and hope to take in the sights. “I don't know much about Northern Ireland, but I hear it's extremely green.”

Although Gomez was reluctant to talk about her relationship with popstar Bieber, who is also expected to jet in for the Emas next month, she did confirm she had attended a private screening of the Kate Winslet/Leonardo DiCaprio movie in LA. When it was pointed out that she would be hosting the event from the heart of the Titanic Quarter, where the ill-fated ship was built, Gomez gushed: “Wow, I didn't know that. That is so cool. I’ll definitely have to go and explore the area now.”

The former Disney actress, best known for her role as Alex Russo in the Emmy-winning Wizards Of Waverly Place, has previously hosted the Pop-Con music awards in New York. As well as hosting the Emas, Gomez will be keeping Twitter followers up-to-date.

“It will be a busy night for me. We'll be trying to do something different with multi-media and I'll be tweeting pictures from backstage,” she said.

But she said she hoped to see as many performances as possible.

“I'm looking forward to seeing all the artists, it's going to be a great line-up,” she said.

The Texas-born star, who has released a promotional Emas video in which she raps about Belfast, is up for one award — Biggest Fans — but will go head to head with Bieber for the gong.

“I'd love to win it for my fans,” she said. “But we'll have to wait and see.”

When asked if she was worried about the tight competition, Gomez laughed: “No, it's just a bit of fun.”profile

Selena Gomez is a Texas-born actress and popstar, best known for her roles in Wizards Of Waverly Place and Another Cinderella Story. She is the lead singer of pop band Selena Gomez And The Scene and is a Unicef goodwill ambassador. She is dating teen pop sensation Justin Bieber.
