Daniel O'Donnell's delight as he becomes a proud grandad

By Laura Abernethy

The daughter of Daniel O'Donnell's wife Majella has given birth to a "beautiful baby girl" - making the popular country singer and his spouse grandparents for the first time.

The proud new grandmother announced the news on Twitter, welcoming her first grandchild Olivia to the world.

Tipperary native Majella (54) said her daughter Siobhan (27) and baby were doing well.

"Delighted to announce that my daughter Siobhan has just given birth to a beautiful baby girl," she wrote.

"Welcome to the world Olivia Shields. All well."

Siobhan's stepfather Daniel (54) wrote on his Facebook page: "We are delighted to announce that Siobhan and Gavin had a little baby girl called Olivia Margaret Lynda Shields.

"She was born at 5.45pm on August 2. They are both doing well.

"Majella and I are absolutely delighted! Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes."

Majella had told of her excitement - and Daniel's eager anticipation - ahead of the birth.

"We're so looking forward to being grandparents," she said.

"I've a room done up for when they visit. We're so excited, we can't wait."

The businesswoman, singer, TV presenter and magazine columnist also paid tribute to TV presenter Cilla Black.

"So happy to have my new granddaughter but shocked to hear of Cilla's passing," she tweeted.

"We had some good times together. Rest in peace chuck."

The Donegal singer and Majella married in 2002 after meeting on holiday in Tenerife.

Daniel is a proud stepfather to Siobhan and her brother Michael. Siobhan got engaged to Gavin Shields last Christmas.

The engagement brought joy to a difficult Christmas as it was the first festive season without Daniel's mum Julia.

She died aged 94 in May 2014 while Majella was battling breast cancer.

At the time Daniel said: "We got a great surprise and were delighted to be present when Gavin proposed to Siobhan. Thankfully for Gavin she said Yes! There was tears and laughter all around."

Majella hinted that the young couple may marry next year as he tweeted: "I'm so happy for them both. Here's to 2016!"

Majella and Daniel recently started filming a reality TV show, Daniel And Majella's B&B Road Trip.

The show, to be aired on UTV Ireland later in the year, follows the couple as they tour the bed and breakfasts of Ireland.
