Snow Patrol have drafted in the services of Iain Archer after it was revealed guitarist Nathan Connolly's hand injury was worst than first feared.

The band was forced to pull out of three shows this week after he "lost the power of his hand".

"Alas his hand is more serious than we first thought," said Gary Lightbody.

"There has been nerve damage, the extent of which is still unclear but it will require more time to rest and rehabilitate than we first thought. That being said we are all hopeful Nathan will be back with us very soon."

Lightbody said the band did not want to pull any more shows and - with Nathan's blessing - asked former band mate, singer-songwriter Iain Archer to perform with them.

They are playing Firenze on Friday night and an acoustic set in Belfast on Saturday.

"For those wondering why this option wasn’t taken for the Copenhagen and German shows earlier," Lightbody continued, "in the week firstly it would have been impossible to rehearse with Iain in time and secondly it would have been in poor taste to engage the services of someone else before we knew what was happening with our brother Nathan.

He continued: "Iain Archer has been a dear friend and collaborator of ours for over two decades. He was in fact a member of ‪Snow Patrol‬ from 2001-2002 in which time we was involved in the writing of some of our Final Straw album (including Chocolate and Run) and he has played with us live many times over the years including the 2009 Reworked tour.

"He is also a key member of Tired Pony.

"We wouldn’t just get a gun for hire to replace our beloved brother Nathan. Iain is family. He is also a revered solo artist with many great albums (my favourite of which is the 2006 album Magnetic North, check it out).

"And for many years now he has been one of the most sought after producers and co-writers in the world: he co-wrote and produced James Bay’s multi-platinum album Chaos and the Calm among many other great albums."

Firstly Nathan wanted me to thank you all for the lovely get well messages. Alas his hand is more serious than we first thought. There has been nerve damage, the extent of which is still unclear but it will require more time to rest and rehabilitate than we first thought. That being said we are all hopeful Nathan will be back with us very soon. As we have a lot of shows coming up this summer and we don’t want to pull anymore of them we have decided (with Nathan’s blessing of course) to invite our old friend @iainarcher ‬ to play guitar with us for a little while. Certainly for today’s show in Firenze, Italy and tomorrow’s show in Belfast for Other Voices. For those wondering why this option wasn’t taken for the Copenhagen and German shows earlier in the week firstly it would have been impossible to rehearse with iain in time and secondly it would have been in poor taste to engage the services of someone else before we knew what was happening with our brother Nathan. Hope you understand. Iain Archer has been a dear friend and collaborator of ours for over two decades. He was in fact a member of ‪snow patrol‬ from 2001-2002 in which time we was involved in the writing of some of our Final Straw album (including Chocolate and Run) and he has played with us live many times over the years including the 2009 Reworked tour. And for many years now he has been one of the most sought after producers and co-writers in the world: he co-wrote and produced James Bay’s multi-platinum album Chaos and the Calm among many other great albums. Please welcome Iain once again to the stage with us as he helps us navigate the choppy waters of Nate’s injury. Get well soon brother. We’ll hold the fort til you’re fighting fit. We love you. gL.x
