Archbishop’s denial is lies, insists teen lover
The former lover of Irish archbishop Richard Burke has insisted she first had sex with him when she was only 14 years old.
Dolores Atwood said she was standing by her claims the archbishop touched her and kissed her as she lay in a hospital bed in Nigeria when she was 14 and had full penetrative sex with him one month later.
Archbishop Burke has repeated his denial that he did not begin having sex with her until she was 21.
Mrs Atwood (41), now living in Canada, said the archbishop did not use a condom when he had sex with her, despite the high rate of HIV in Nigeria.
The 61-year-old senior cleric, from Fethard, Co Tipperary, had been forced to step down as Archbishop of Benin city in Nigeria because of the scandal.
He has now formally resigned, stating that he had broken his vow of celibacy.
Yesterday, Mrs Atwood said that having read the archbishop's denial of child abuse, she “no longer believes he is sorry”.
