Belfast's Saoirse Hallam joins Cheryl Cole and Pixie Lott on album

She began singing in her bedroom on the Ormeau Road in Belfast — but now Saoirse Hallam has been included on an album with pop stars Cheryl Cole, Taio Cruz, Pixie Lott and The Saturdays.

The 21-year-old was spotted by DJ and producer Micky Modelle when she won the Citybeat Young Star Search in August and was asked to cover the SOS Band’s 1983 hit Just Be Good To Me, which was more recently recorded by Lily Allen.

The remix, which was produced by Party Crashers, was then picked up and included in the latest Clubland album, currently number one in the UK Compilation Albums chart.

The Belfast singer said she was astonished by the massive response she has received since the album went on sale on November 8.

“It’s weird because everyone keeps telling me that they have seen my name on the album and people have been getting me to sign CDs for them.

“It’s still quite weird, I still don’t believe it when I hear myself on the radio,” she said.

But Saoirse said that her biggest fan is still her mother.

“My mummy is more excited than anybody, she has my song as her ringtone and she keeps on telling people about it.

“My mum was a dancer and a singer and she got me into singing. I started off by singing at weddings — I think I was around five or six when I sang at a wedding for the first time. I have always loved singing,” Saoirse said.

The singer, who works in the Kids Korner nursery on the Ravenhill Road,

only found out that her song would be included on the number one album when she was called on stage by Star Search judges Modelle and DJ Stuart Robinson.

Producer Modelle said: “She was great to work with, she was very nice and very gracious. I think she has had a few knockbacks but now this has given her a chance to shine and I think she has. She is on a number one album with major artists.”

The DJ added he really enjoyed judging the Citybeat Young Star Search — which was sponsored by the Belfast Telegraph — and said that Saoirse’s success had shown the massive opportunities the competition provided for entrants.

Saoirse will be performing in Carrickfergus on Friday, Bloomfield Shopping Centre in Bangor this Saturday, and will be in Glengormley on Sunday.

Clubland 18, which includes Just Be Good To Me by Party Crashers featuring Saoirse is available at all good record shops.
