By Colin O'Carroll

Chart-topping act One Direction are to play Belfast as part of their first headline tour.

The group, who scored a number one earlier this month with What Makes You Beautiful, will begin their 21-date tour later this year.

They will play the Waterfront Hall on January 25 and 26 in 2012.

The five-piece — who rose to fame on contestants on The X Factor last year — are due to release their debut album in November.

The British-Irish boyband have previously played live, as they took part in the X Factor Live Tour earlier this year.

Promoters say their live show will see them play their own songs “alongside some of their favourite covers and a few surprises”.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday at 10am with further details from

The tour kicks off on December 21 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, just days after the latest series of X Factor reaches its climax.

Niall Horan — the band’s sole Irish singer — Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson finished third on the seventh series of X Factor.

They finished behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.
