Britney: I give props to Miley
Britney Spears has defended Miley Cyrus following her controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, saying she gives her "props".
Former Hannah Montana star Miley was criticised for her saucy display at the event, where she twerked at Robin Thicke while wearing a skimpy nude latex bikini and touching herself with a giant foam finger.
But Britney, who has raised eyebrows with some of her own steamy stage performances in the past, said during a Good Morning America interview that Miley didn't deserve the backlash.
"I think anytime you do a performance that is that memorable, you're going to have criticism," said the 31-year-old.
"I think she's doing her thing. She's being herself, so I give props to her."
Britney's comments come days after Miley apparently hinted that the Ooh La La singer had been the inspiration for her raunchy new image.
Miley, 20, revealed she was a huge fan of Britney and used to try to copy her routines, reported the Daily Mirror.
She told Alan Carr on his Chatty Man show on Channel 4: "I was obsessed with her Slave For You video. That was the first head shake I got from my dad when the video came out, as I tried to re-enact the whole film.
"Britney once performed across the street from my dad's apartment in Canada - but there was no way I was going at that point as I was always trying to re-enact everything she did."
