Don’t Kill My Vibe singer Sigrid scoops BBC Music Sound Of gong

It comes just four years after Sigrid started making music when her brother told her he needed a new song for a gig.

Norwegian singer Sigrid has been named winner of the BBC Music Sound Of gong for 2018.

The 21-year-old, known for her debut single Don’t Kill My Vibe, tops the list chosen by more than 170 influential music experts.

Sigrid started making music four years ago when her brother, a musician, told her he needed a new song for a gig, two weeks later.

Tearfully reacting to her win, she said: “It’s a lot to take in to have won something as prestigious as BBC Music Sound Of.

“I feel honoured as there are so many other artists I look up to who have won this before me, and honestly, I’m just really happy and proud of what my team and I have achieved together.

“I’m from a small town called Alesund in Norway. I’m still 21 and it’s quite crazy to get this recognition.

“I’m very excited about the year ahead and sharing new music with everyone.”

Previous winners include Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding and last year, Ray BLK.

Judges said the singer-songwriter’s “nervy, cutting-edge pop music…  infused with natural humour and charisma” is expected to dominate the charts this year.

The top five is a mix of international, British, unsigned and signed acts.

Singer-songwriter Rex Orange County is runner up, followed by Manchester urban jazz artist IAMDDB, US R&B star Khalid and indie quartet Pale Waves, who also formed in Manchester.

Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac says: “Sigrid is one of those really special artists making quality, exciting and feisty – yet fragile – pop songs that are an absolute pleasure to play on the radio.

“Sigrid is an incredibly talented performer and songwriter and so very deserving of the Sound Of 2018 crown. I’m really looking forward to watching her rise.”

James Stirling, head of content commissioning at BBC Music, said: “The range of artists clearly demonstrates both the quality and breadth of music currently coming through.”

The top five:

1. Sigrid
2. Rex Orange County
4. Khalid
5. Pale Waves
