In Pictures: Electric Picnic fans defy rain after festival's sunny start

By Maureen Coleman

Thousands of festival-goers at Electric Picnic will be donning their raincoats and wellies today as the weather is set to break for the rest of the weekend.

The boutique festival at Stradbally Hall in Co Laois got off to a sunny start yesterday with blue skies and warm temperatures.

Large throngs of music fans from Northern Ireland set off early yesterday for the three-day event, which is growing in size and stature each year.

And star-spotters will be kept busy this weekend too, with a host of celebrities expected to attend.

Among the well-known faces believed to be among the fans at Stradbally Hall are actor Sean Penn, actress Natalie Portman, supermodel Christy Turlington, Twilight star Jamie Campbell Bower and his Harry Potter girlfriend Bonnie Wright.

Last night LCD Soundsytem and Leftfield were among the acts who got the party started while tonight will be the turn of Massive Attack, Friendly Fires and Mumford and Sons to take to the stage.

Revellers were in high spirits yesterday, thanks to the unexpected Indian summer. But later today, the September sunshine will be replaced by showers, with more rain expected tomorrow.
