Northern Ireland's Wonder Villains net football legend Gianfranco Zola to star in new video

By Maureen Coleman

Northern Ireland pop band Wonder Villains have scored a spectacular goal after lining up an Italian football legend to appear in their new video.

Gianfranco Zola stars in the video for a song written as a tribute to the former Napoli and Chelsea man.

The Derry four-piece, who are all football fans, first recorded the single Zola several years ago, but have now re-recorded it for their debut album Rocky, which was released this week.

The superstar striker was made aware of the song by his daughter Martina, who loved it. When Wonder Villains decided to recut it to coincide with the World Cup, an approach was made to Zola to ask him to feature in the new video.

Having heard the track himself, Zola agreed and the ball was immediately set in motion. The video was shot at Woodside Park Club in north London last week by Belfast-based company Little Giant Films.

In the video, Wonder Villains' Eimear Coyle and Cheylene Murphy take on their bandmates, Kieran Coyle and Ryan McGroarty, in a girls versus boys match. But they have a secret weapon up their sleeves when they telephone Zola for help and he turns up at the pitch to pass on his skills. Unsurprisingly, the girls end up winning the match.

Co-manager Davy Matchett explained how Zola came to be involved with the shoot.

"Zola's daughter Martina had seen the band perform the track on a digital channel a few years ago when they were doing a bit of sports television," he explained.

"When we decided to re-record Zola again, we made contact with Martina about two months ago to let her know we were going to run with the song again, and explored the possibility of her dad appearing in the video.

"They were very keen to talk to us and with Martina acting as the middle man, Zola agreed to be in it in principle. It took a good bit of organising, with everyone's busy, diaries, but the stars lined up together and when the band was in London last week to do a show, we put a day aside to shoot the video."

Rocky is available to buy online and from record shops.

Gianfranco Zola is an Italian former footballer and manager. In his native country he played for Napoli alongside Maradona, and at Parma before moving to Chelsea. He was voted the Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1996/97, and in 2003 was voted Chelsea's greatest player ever. He began his managerial career with West Ham and then Watford. He was capped 35 times for Italy.
