Where to see some Foxes in the city

Cathedral Quarter, Belfast, Wednesday to Sunday, June 22-26

Having established a strong reputation as a quality roots-based music festival every September for the past 12 years, the acclaimed Coors Light Open House Festival has moved the timing of this year’s event to the, hopefully, warmer high summer period of June.

The organisers assure us that only the timing is changing and that all the favourite Open House ingredients — headline shows in Custom House Square, intimate gigs in venues throughout the Cathedral Quarter, free traditional music pub sessions, ChilliFest — remain part of the fun, with the addition of a new Breakthrough series of gigs in the Oh Yeah Music Centre.

Having started out with Noah And The Whale, singer-songwriter Laura Marling has met with major success with both of her solo albums, Alas I Cannot Swim and I Speak Because I Can, and has been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Award.

It is a real coup for the festival to present this Brit and NME award-winning English folk artist to headline an outdoor show in Custom House Square next Friday, when she will be joined by special guests, America’s Avett Brothers, with their rootsy mix of country, bluegrass, rock, pop and punk, while legendary traditional Irish folk duo Mike McGoldrick and Dezi Donnelly, and hotly-tipped songstress Louise Hull (The Pins), complete the bill.

On Saturday, the summer air at Custom House Square will be filled with sweet harmonies as the highly-anticipated Fleet Foxes (above) make their local debut, with support and a mesmerising blend of indie folk from the award-winning Villagers and The Low Anthem.

Other acts confirmed for the festival include young Nashvillian Caitlin Rose, new talent Marcus Foster, Irish duo The Lost Brothers, London outfit Treetop Flyers, Urban Voodoo Machine and Alabama 3.
