Album: The Chemical Brothers, Further (Freestyle Dust/Parlophone)
"Further", of course, was the destination-plate of the bus driven across America by Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, and thus makes a fitting title for an album on which The Chemical Brothers indulge their more psychedelic leanings.
They've always had an element of acid-streaked experimentalism in their work, but here it tends to drive out the more mainstream components: it's three long, swirling tracks – including the 12-minute "Baba O'Riley"/Krautrock-style synthesiser motorik of "Escape Velocity" – before the first bona fide big-beat rhythm slams in with the prog-tastic "Dissolve". Elsewhere, the cantering groove of "Horse Power" sounds familiar enough to have been cannibalised from an earlier Chemical cut, while the lightly scudding fizz of "K + D + B" suggests the first two letters may refer to mixmasters Kruder & Dorfmeister.
