Classical Music 12/3/10

By Philip Hammond

Ulster Orchestra, Ulster Hall, Belfast, Tonight, 7.45pm

The composers Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms form the basis of tonight’s Ulster Orchestra concert. The soloist is the renowned British cellist Natalie Clein (right). Her career began at 16, when she won the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year and was the first ever British winner of the Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians.

She is an extremely committed mentor of young talent and has worked extensively around the world. Yesterday she worked with young players from Northern Ireland. Tonight she plays the Schumann Cello Concerto. The orchestra will be conducted by its recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor Paul Watkins, himself a cellist of some repute.

Tickets are available from £8 to £20, with a student standby ticket at £3. See for details.
