Classical Music 27/8/10

By Philip Hammond

Church of Ireland, Armagh Cathedral, Armagh, Until Sun

The Charles Wood Summer School seeks to maintain high standards of church music in difficult times through its week-long annual course in Armagh. As always, the emphasis has been on music for liturgical use.

The Charles Wood Singers, a choir of some 45 members drawn from Ireland and England, perform to a very demanding standard under the direction of David Hill. Over the weekend, events include a number of sung eucharists and one or two other recitals.

The week concludes with a Festal Evensong in the Cathedral on Sunday, August 29, at 5 pm. Tonight, the Charles Wood Summer School holds its Gala Concert in the Church of Ireland Cathedral at 8pm.

Admission: £15; Concessions £12. Tickets available from Armagh Tourist Information Centre, tel: 0283752 1800 or at the door.
