Actor Benedict Cumberbatch says sorry over race gaffe

By Tim Moynihan

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has apologised after talking about "coloured actors" on US television.

The actor - nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game - was criticised after using the phrase while criticising the lack of opportunities in the UK for actors from ethnic minorities.

He said: "I'm devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot.

"I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive. The most shaming aspect of this for me is that I was talking about racial inequality in the performing arts."
