Actor Rory Kinnear turns playwright
Rory Kinnear - the man tipped to be the next Doctor Who - has turned playwright and will see his debut work performed on stage later this year.
The star, the son of character actor Roy Kinnear, has appeared in several Bond films and recently starred as Iago opposite Adrian Lester in Othello at the National Theatre.
His play, The Herd, is set around the 21st birthday party of a severely disabled man called Andy Griffith and includes Sherlock star Louise Brealey among the cast.
Some bookmakers stopped taking bets on Kinnear becoming the next Doctor Who after a flurry of bets, but the man himself laughed off reports he could replace Matt Smith who is expected to bow out after the Christmas special.
He said: "If I was an actor who was really longing to play Doctor Who, then this would be torturous, but it's a programme I've never watched, so I don't even really know what it is."
Howard Davies, who has worked with the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, directs the play which opens at the Bush Theatre in west London in September.
