Ant McPartlin checks into rehab to seek help for alcohol and drug addictions
The 41-year-old's issues, which are believed to have stemmed from his battle with depression, are said to have been furthered following a knee injury two years ago.
Ant McPartlin has checked himself into rehab to tackle his addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs.
The 41-year-old's issues, which are believed to have stemmed from his battle with depression, are said to have been furthered following a knee injury two years ago, after which he was prescribed painkillers, including the opioid Tramadol, to help with his discomfort.
During an interview with The Sun on Sunday newspaper, Ant, who has been married to make-up artist Lisa Armstrong since 2006, admitted he has been going through a "difficult time", so has made the tough decision to take himself to a rehabilitation centre for the next two months.
"The first step is to admit to yourself you need help," he told the publication. "I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry.
"I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time."
According to the newspaper, Ant struggled to control his emotions when he admitted the extent of his addictions to presenting partner Declan Donnelly, who is then said to have contacted counsellors on his friend's behalf and eventually convinced him to seek help in rehab.
Ant added to the publication that he's hoping his decision to ask for professional help may inspire others in similar situations to do the same.
"I've spoken out because I think it's important that people ask for help if they're going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery," he explained.
It's not the first time Ant has spoken about using drugs. During an interview with The Guardian's Weekend magazine in 2013, the presenter revealed that he and Dec, who first found fame on TV show Byker Grove, had "dabbled in drugs", but insisted: "Years ago, yeah (we tried drugs), but we're not really druggy people, that's the thing.
"I think you either go into that crowd as a kid or you don't, and we didn't. We found the love of alcohol very early on and we stayed with it."
Since their time on Byker Grove, Ant and Dec launched a brief pop career but found their foothold in the world of presenting. They are now the most successful presenting duo in the U.K., fronting shows including Britain's Got Talent, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
