Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie Hunter have become parents.

The news caps a fine week for the British actor, 38, who was named a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to the performing arts and charity.

A spokesman for the couple who wed earlier this year said: "Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son.

"We would kindly ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during these next few precious weeks"

Cumberbatch missed out on winning the best actor Oscar this year, his stock as an actor having risen considerably following stand-out roles in the sleuth detective series.

His early career was steadily successful with roles in weighty dramas such as To The Ends Of The Earth and Small Island, and a cameo in cult comedy series Nathan Barley alongside then little-known names such as Ben Whishaw and Mathew Horne.

Cumberbatch's life changed forever when he picked up the deerstalker and signed on to play Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's updated take on the classic crime stories.

The show made him a star around the world with fans from China - where he was dubbed Curly Fu - to the studios of Hollywood who marked him out as one to watch.

They soon signed him up to star in Star Trek: Into Darkness and 12 Years A Slave, with both films benefiting from the attentions of his global army of fans who jokingly refer to themselves as ''Cumberbitches''.

They also flocked to cinemas to see him as tortured code-breaking genius Alan Turing in The Imitation Game - the role which saw him nominated for the leading actor Oscar.

Cumberbatch has sometimes seemed uncomfortable with the scale of his fame - he was forced to complain when a star-struck neighbour started tweeting his every move - and hordes of fans, often in costume, flock to every Sherlock event from around the world.

Cumberbatch and Hunter announced their engagement in a notice in The Times newspaper in November last year and they tied the knot i n a private ceremony three months later.

The couple met when they appeared together in the 2009 film Burlesque Fairytales.

Hunter is an Oxford graduate who studied modern languages. She has directed a number of experimental and avant garde productions including a puppet version of Shackleton's Antarctic expedition which toured the US.

She has taken acting roles in TV shows such as Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood and an episode of Midsomer Murders, as well as the 2004 film version of Vanity Fair starring Reese Witherspoon.

Her stage productions as a director have also included the Britten opera The Rape of Lucretia. She has also had a music career of her own, recording a French language album with Robbie Williams's collaborator Guy Chambers in 2005 called The Isis Project, after they met through a mutual friend.
