Broadcaster Nicky Campbell has said he is "supremely proud" at being given an OBE for services to children.

Campbell, a regular on TV and radio for years, has spoken openly about his experience of being adopted and is a patron of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF).

He told the Press Association: " I am genuinely flabbergasted and if I have in any small way helped raise the profile of adoption and fostering then I'm supremely proud."

Born and raised in Edinburgh, he presents his own Radio 5 Live show and has also fronted hit TV shows including Long Lost Family, Wheel Of Fortune and Watchdog.

Campbell, who was adopted as a baby by Frank and Sheila Campbell, wrote a 2004 book about his own experience called Blue Eyed Son.

Last year, he fronted the ITV series Wanted: A Family Of My Own, and spoke about his adoptive mother, saying: "She is my real mum. She isn't my birth mum but she is my real mum. That is my truth and the magical essence of adoption."

Campbell is married to Tina Ritchie and is the father of four daughters.

Caroline Selkirk, chief executive of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), said the charity was "delighted" he had been honoured.

She said: " Nicky is passionate about adoption and the issues surrounding all looked-after children and we are thrilled this passion and his hard work has been recognised.

"Over the 10 years Nicky has been involved with BAAF, he has tirelessly supported our work helping some of the most vulnerable children in society.

"He has especially helped raise awareness around adoption, not only by supporting BAAF, but also through sharing his personal experience of adoption publicly and highlighting the issues throughout his professional life."
