X Factor favourite Matt Cardle has suggested that contestants on the show with real talent are "expendable" - to make way for those who make good television.
The 27-year-old suggested that X Factor boss Simon Cowell had only voted to keep Katie Waissel in on Sunday night because she gets the show lots of "attention".
He told the Daily Mirror that he was "shocked and devastated" that his friend Aiden Grimshaw was booted out after the judges went to deadlock and the result was based on the public vote, saying it was "like losing a brother".
In what is being interpreted as a thinly veiled swipe at X Factor judge Simon, he said: "I knew Dannii (Minogue) and Louis (Walsh) would vote for Aiden but I was shocked when Simon sent him home, but then Katie is better for the show than Aiden is.
"She gets the coverage - she gets the show attention. Aiden just isn't like that but he is a much better singer."
He added: "In terms of the show, Aiden was expendable."
Matt said that there would be "uproar" if the likes of Rebecca Ferguson was pushed out in favour of Katie and said: "I don't feel safe in the competition after this."
He pleaded with viewers to stop voting for controversial contestant Wagner Carrilho, saying "the joke is over" and "he can't sing".
He said of his ex, Lauren Cutmore, who sold her story to a newspaper claiming he was addicted to sex: "I hope she's happy with her cash. I hope she pi***s it up the wall."
Speaking about head X Factor stylist Grace Woodward, whom he is rumoured to be dating, he said: "We are very close but if you hug someone backstage you are in a serious relationship."
