Carry On for Gavin And Stacey star
Ruth Jones has moved a world away from Barry Island for her latest role as a Carry On actress harbouring a passionate secret.
The star, who made her name as Nessa in Gavin And Stacey, plays Hattie Jacques in a one-off film about her secret affair with a younger man during her marriage to Dad's Army star John Le Mesurier in the early Sixties.
Hattie was known for playing formidable battleaxes in the long-running film series.
Ruth said: "Hattie Jacques is one of my comedy heroines and I'm thrilled to have been asked to play her. She was an incredibly talented and fascinating woman, both on and off screen, and so much more than just the 'funny fat lady'. I can't wait."
Cold Feet star Robert Bathurst plays Le Mesurier with Being Human star Aidan Turner as her youthful lover John Schofield.
The film is part of BBC Four's autumn season, which also includes a film tribute by Billy Connolly to one of Scotland's greatest poets Norman MacCaig, who died in 1996.
Another highlight is a remake of science fiction classic The First Men In The Moon.
The League Of Gentleman star Mark Gatiss will play Professor Cavor in the adaptation of the HG Wells story.
Also starring is Rory Kinnear, who recounts the story to a young boy in 1969 as the world waits for news of the Apollo 11 astronauts.
Gatiss will also appear on the channel presenting a a three-part documentary celebrating the world of the horror film from the black and white era to modern day slasher movies.
