Constellations: Gorgeous brew of fun brings art truly alive

By Matthew Coyle

The surrealist creativity of Joan Miro comes to life, in vivid detail, with Constellations, an exciting, kinetic dance piece inspired by the abstract genius of the great Catalan artist.

Running as part of Young at Art's Belfast Children's Festival, the production is brought to the Mac by Madrid-based company Aracaladanza and its founder, Argentinian choreographer Enrique Cabrera.

Aimed at a younger audience in particular, Constellations represents a gorgeous brew of Barcelona's verve and Castile's dashing refinement. The performance comes alive thanks to an audacious sense of colour mixed with the quiet anarchy that characterised Miro's career. For the many rapt schoolchildren in attendance, his work is rendered subtly accessible via an injection of undeniable fun.

It is wondrous, charming stuff replete with an air of whimsy that never grates, not once.
