Corrie's Kirkbride quits Twitter

Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride has quit Twitter after becoming the victim of abuse over her appearance.

The 58-year-old actress - who has played Deirdre Barlow in the soap for almost 40 years - has been subjected to a long-running stream of abuse from online trolls using the social networking site to mock her neck, Digital Spy reported.

Anne, who beat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in her neck after being diagnosed in 1993, has now deleted her Twitter account.

She tweeted: "Been nice knowing you twitter. Apologies to all the lovely people I've met on here. But in all honesty, i've had enough."

The soap star had previously told her followers that her neck was a "sensitive subject" after receiving negative comments.

Anne's co-star Shobna Gulati, who plays Sunita Alahan, also quit Twitter in June after receiving racist abuse.
