Dance contest finalists unveiled

The 20 finalists in this year's So You Think You Can Dance competition have been revealed.

Ten male and 10 female dancers have been through auditions and choreography camp and will now take part in the live shows, as part of the BBC One programme headed by Nigel Lythgoe and Arlene Phillips.

They are competing for the chance to win £50,000 prize money and an invitation to dance on the US version of the dancing show, hosted by Cat Deeley. Dancer Sisco Gomez and presenter Louise Redknapp complete the panel of judges who will mark the dancers' efforts on Saturday nights.

Among the finalists is a 29-year-old with partial deafness, a dancer who reached the semi-finals in Britain's Got Talent, and a model who has performed on the X Factor.

Kirsty Swain, from Sutton, Surrey, was diagnosed with the condition at the age of 12 and only has half her hearing. She said she dances by feeling for vibrations and listening to the beat.

Kirsty, who appeared in the film version of musical Mamma Mia, said: "When I saw the show last year, I thought that it was made for me - prove you can dance by showing off variety and style."

Bethany Rose Harrison, 20, from Devon, said she is determined to reach the final show after her success in Britain's Got Talent with dance group Ruby Girls. She said: "I just feel this is the right place for me to be and I finally fit in somewhere."

Lee Bridgman, who has appeared on the pages of British Vogue and on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, said he wants to focus on dance now. The 21-year-old from Plymouth danced alongside Cher Lloyd and One Direction on the X Factor last year, and said: "I really want to show the world what I'm made of, and what I'm about."

The So You Think You Can Dance studio shows begin on April 16 with a showcase performance. The dancers will be voted off, one by one, from the following week.
